Happy birthday, Donna. Looking forward to seeing you at the 60th!
George… Thank you for your message. The living conditions were pretty much as expected. We all slept on bunkbeds in a big room at a labor camp. The bathroom and showers were in a separate building. They gave us breakfast every morning and packed in a lunch. The working conditions in the field were harsh. The daily temperatures were usually in the 90s in the desert at Blythe. We were given big bags and we would walk down furrows and fill the bags with cantaloupes. When our backs were full with about 40 pounds of cantaloupes, we would walk up a plank attached to the back of a truck and empty our bags. On our lunch break we would swim in the irrigation ditches. Plenty of beer and cigarettes at night to ease the pain. The whole experience gave me a lasting appreciation for hard work tcontribution of immigrant labor.
BTW … I enjoy and appreciate your contribution and articles that you post on the website.
Happy birthday Bob. Sending good vibrations your way.
